Hillary Clinton demanded from the Belarusian authorities to "release political prisoners and follow the path of democratic change." During her speech, she mentioned the countries with the recent cases of "dissidents' violent suppression," placing Belarus on a par with Burma.

Recall that there was a mass protest after the presidential elections on December 19, 2010 in Minsk, cracked down by police.

Former presidential candidate Vladimir Niakliaeu, Vitali Rymasheuski, Nikolai Statkevich, Dmitri Uss and Andrei Sannikov, as well as some other opposition leaders, were sentenced to different terms on the case of riots.

Another defendant on that case, former candidate Ales Michalevic, was able to leave Belarus, despite the travel ban, and was granted political asylum in the Czech Republic.

In January, the EU imposed sanctions on Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and 157 Belarusian officials, denying them EU entry and freezing their personal financial assets in the community, if any. Subsequently, these sanctions were expanded.
