Monday, October 3, Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov said that Belarus will retain its part in the EU program "Eastern Partnership." "We’ve not participated in the summit in Warsaw, but Belarus will continue participating in the "Eastern Partnership," said Sergei Martynov.
The head of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus said that there are so many gaps but no practice in the "Eastern Partnership" program. "This view is shared by our partners in the "Eastern Partnership," said Sergei Martynov.
He says that Belarus, together with Lithuania and Ukraine, has offered more than 20 specific projects, but so far there has been no answer. "Overall, we believe that this is a useful program," says Sergei Martynov, pointing out that Belarus stands for the observance of all principles of partnership enshrined in the first summit in Prague.
The "Eastern Partnership" is aimed at rapprochement of the European Union with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The program provides for the allocation of €600 million to the "Six" by 2013, which is intended to strengthen state institutions, control of borders and help to small businesses.
September 29-30, the Polish capital hosted the second summit of the "Eastern Partnership." However, the official Minsk refused to attend the meeting in the end. During the summit, the EU demanded for the immediate release of political prisoners in Belarus. At the same time, German Chancellor Angela Merkel advocated for additional sanctions against the Belarusian leadership, not accepted by President Dalia Grybauskaite, declaring that the isolation of Belarus is a big mistake. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko expressed his gratitude to Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Moldova for support of his country at the summit.
