Attorney General: Konovalov Considers Death Penalty Lawful

Dmitri Konovalov, sentenced to death for the bombing at "Kastrychnitskaya" subway station in Minsk on April 11, 2011, has admitted his sentence as lawful and refused to file a petition for clemency. This was announced by Prosecutor General of Belarus Alexander Koniukov on January 27.

According to him, Konovalov has been twice reminded of the opportunity to apply for pardon, but he’s twice refused to exercise this right, BelTA informs.

Another convict Vladislav Kovalev, sentenced to death for complicity in terrorism, filed a petition for clemency, reminded Alexander Koniukov. "The conclusion of the Prosecutor General on Kovalev’s petition is already prepared. So, the documents will be shortly submitted to the Presidential Commission on Pardon," said the prosecutor, adding that the "date of the commission meeting on the case of Konovalov and Kovalev is still unknown."

As Telegraf previously reported, 15 people were killed as a result of the explosion at "Kastrychnitskaya" subway station in Minsk on April 11, 2011. Vitsebsk residents Dmitri Konovalov and Vladislav Kovalev were convicted for this attack.

Dmitri Konovalov is accused of committing crimes under Part 1, 2, 3 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code (terrorism), Part 2, 3 of Article 295 (trafficking of weapons, ammunition, explosives), Part 2, 3 of Article 339 (malicious hooliganism), Part 2 of Article 218 (intentional destruction or damage to property), Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 3 of Article 339 (attempt to hooliganism), Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 218 (attempt to deliberate destruction of property).

Vladislav Kovalev is charged under Part 6 of Article 16 and Part 3 Article 289 (participation in an act of terrorism), Part 3 of Article 295 and Part 2, 3 of Article 339, Part 2 of Article 218, Part 2 of Article 405 (concealment of crimes), Part 1, 2 of Article 406 (misprision). November 14, public prosecution demanded to sentence defendants to death.

December 7, 2011, Vladislav Kovalev filed a petition for clemency to the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. This was reported on December 9 by Lubov Kovaleva, the mother of Vladislav Kovalev, sentenced to the capital penalty.
