President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is ready to reform the political system. "We'll take such a step, although there’s no disaster in this respect in our country. But we must always be one step ahead of the processes ongoing in the country," said the Head of State in an interview with Chinese media on January 17.
"We are now studying certain trends in the world. And, of course, we will adapt and modernize our political system," said Alexander Lukashenko at the meeting with Chinese journalists, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Belarus and China.
The President believes that today political reforms need paying special attention to. "I’m talking about this for the first time, but I’ve long been pondering this question, discussing these issues. And we'll start quietly moving in this direction," BelTA quoted Alexander Lukashenko.
According to the president, the main condition for any reform of the political system is to maintain stability in the country. "The main thing is to enable people to live normally and express their opinions. The main thing is to give people the opportunity to preserve the fundamental rights they claim for," said the President.
As Telegraf previously reported, representatives of the Belarusian opposition have repeatedly called on government to amend the election law. On the eve of parliamentary elections to be held in the autumn of 2012, such claims are heard more often. However, representatives of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, as well as the head of state himself, do not consider it necessary to change the long established order of the elections.
So, in October 2011, Alexander Lukashenko said he would not break the electoral law and make any changes to it before the parliamentary elections. "This is totally unacceptable on the eve of the political campaign," said the president.
At a press conference for Belarusian and foreign mass media on December 23, Alexander Lukashenko also said that "there’s no dictatorship in the Belarusian parliament." "Dictatorship is only in the president’s hands. He has the right to take any decision alone," said the President.
