President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko hopes that the Catholic Church will play a more active role in the stabilization of relations between Belarus and Western Europe. This was stated by Head of State on April 9 during a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta to Belarus Paul Frederic von Fuhrherr.
Today's meeting of Alexander Lukashenko with the Maltese diplomat is associated with the completion of a diplomatic mission of Paul Friedrich von Fuhrherr in Belarus, BelTA informs.
"Of course, I will say frankly that we’ve hoped for better collaboration with the Catholic Church. We believe that the Catholic Church should have been more active in improving relations between Belarus and Western Europe. I'm not even talking in general about the European Union, as we know who's playing first fiddle there. Therefore, we would like to convey this signal through your help," said Alexander Lukashenko addressing the Maltese ambassador.
According to the President, the Order of Malta has a major impact in the Holy See. "There are a lot of influential people there who will have to see in the end what's going on between the country with the second-largest Catholic denomination in the post-Soviet space, which shelters good people, willing to live in friendship with Western Europe," said Alexander Lukashenko.
The President also thanked Paul Friedrich von Fuhrherr for fruitful work in Belarus. According to the President, he would like all Western ambassadors to have worked in the same vein, establishing good relations with Belarus.
"You’ve left a pleasant and considerable impact here through your activities. Unlike your colleagues, the Western ambassadors, you're the one who strives in every way to help Belarus and have done everything possible for the benefit of the Belarusian people," stressed Alexander Lukashenko.
In turn, Paul Friedrich von Fuhrherr assured the head of the Belarusian state that the Order of Malta would facilitate the dialogue between Belarus and Western Europe within its capabilities.
