President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said, answering the questions of MPs after his annual message to the Parliament and the people on May 8, that the sport can’t be apolitical. "Sport - it's a great politician," said the President, speaking of a possible removal of World Hockey Championship in 2014 from Belarus, called for by many Western politicians.
"The fact that politicians with dirty hands begin to interfere with the sport, not knowing if it is tennis, or football, or hockey – won’t work," said the Belarusian leader.
According to him, "now they are pressing on Yanukovych" (President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych - Telegraf) by the European politicians’ boycott of the European Football Championship to be held in June in Ukraine and Poland. "Barroso, Merkel and Sarkozy (Head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, outgoing French president Nicolas Sarkozy - Telegraf) won’t come. It looks as if that the match can’t take place without Barroso? Surely, it will be held," said Alexander Lukashenko.
The President said that he wouldn’t be strongly offended if World Hockey Cup is removed from Belarus. "Are they going to hate me or Belarusians then? We’re building everything we’ll need in future," he said.
"We have nothing to lose. Sports world will lose if out-of-lunch politicians lean on Fasel (head of the International Ice Hockey Federation Rene Fasel - Telegraf). But I do not think it will happen. I take it easy... No one needs to close the center of Europe," the Belarusian leader said.
