11 People Claim for President for the First Time, Yermoshina

Action group of 11 contenders for the presidency of Belarus presented petitions to the territorial election commission, the Central Election Commission head Lidia Yermoshina said and added that "they have only presented, because there are too many questions." The CEC head also noted that it's the first time in the history of the country to register such a number of potential candidates. 

Lidia Yermoshina said that some subscription lists contained errors. In addition, according to the CEC head, there were some photocopies, which was not under the law. CEC Chairman also stresses that, no predictions on the possible number of presidential candidates won’t be made by the CEC until November 8 when the district committees have examined all the signatures and transmitted reports to the voblast and Minsk city election commissions, BelTA informs.

Lidia Yermoshina reminded that 100 thousand signatures could be collected by the actions groups of seven candidates in their support in 1994, and only six candidates were registered subsequently.

According to the CEC, the action group of Alexander Lukashenko has collected 1.1 million signatures, a group of Gregory Kastuseu — about 107 thousand signatures, Ales Mikhalevich — about 120.5 thousand, Vladimir Niakliaeu — 161 thousand, Vladimir Provalski — 109 thousand (in the same district of Vitsebsk), Yaroslav Romanchuk — 128 thousand, Vital Rymasheuski — 105 thousand, Andrei Sannikov — 150 thousand, Nikolai Statkevich — 117 thousand, Viktor Tereshchenko — 122 thousand, Dmitry Uss — 110 thousand signatures.

Representatives of Political Parties and NGO Claim 40% of Seats in Eelection Commissions

According to Lidia Yermoshina, representatives of political parties and public associations claim 39.1% of the seats in election commissions. A total of 6.3 thousand places in the precinct commissions are claimed by 83.9 thousand people. Among them, above 39% are the representatives of political parties and public associations.

According to the CEC, the most active in the nomination of their representatives in precinct commissions proved to be the Communist Party of Belarus — 700. In second place is given to the United Civic Party (505 members), the third — the Republican Party of Labor and Justice (468). Public associations nominated almost 30 thousand people to precinct election commissions, including more than 10 thousand — the Federation of Trade Unions, over 4.3 thousand — the public association «Belaya Rus» and more than 4.2 thousand — Belarusian Women’s Union.

41.5% of those, who intend to work in election commissions, have applied in written form, 19.4% of them representatives of labor collectives.
