Miasnikovich Hopes for Breakthrough in Relations with Russia

Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Miasnikovich suggested holding the regular meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Union State in Minsk in February and March, 2011. Belarusian Prime Minister announced this idea at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on January 20. Mikhail Miasnikovich noted that there were a lot of questions within the Union State and their solution would be a breakthrough in the relations with Russia.

In turn, Vladimir Putin supported the idea of holding a regular meeting of the Union Council of Ministers in Minsk and invited to agree on a specific date, BelTA informs.

In addition, the Prime Minister said that the Belarusian-Russian turnover was almost back to the pre-crisis level. «The most important thing in the economic sphere of cooperation between Belarus and Russia is their growing turnover. In January-November 2010, it was almost brought back to the pre-crisis level. The total turnover for the period amounted to $25 billion,» Vladimir Putin said.

«The company strives to increase deliveries of Belarusian products to the Russian market. This figure has increased by 47%. The potential of cooperation is high; we will have a lot to talk about,» the Prime Minister of Russia said.

Belarusian Prime Minister agreed that the trade turnover between Belarus and Russia had recently grown by almost 20%. However, according to the Belarusian Prime Minister, trade balance remains sharply negative for Belarus. Mikhail Miasnikovich explained it by the fact that Russian exports to Belarus is dominated by energy resources.
