Lithuanian President Grybauskaite has denied that she called incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko a guarantor of stability and independence of Belarus. According to the Lithuanian leader, the Belarusian people are the main guarantor of stability in the country.
«I think the main guarantor of stability of Belarus is the Belarusians themselves, and the person, they’ll choose, will be trusted upon and cooperated with. This decision is up to the people of Belarus,» Grybauskaite underlined, the Belarusian service of Radio «Liberty» reports, referring to the agency ELTA.
As Telegraf previously reported, the president of Lithuania Grybauskaite is confident that the victory of Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential elections in Belarus will limit Russia’s influence on Minsk and will maintain stability in the EU neighboring country. According to Reuters, referring to the sources in the EU, this was stated by Grybauskaite at the meeting with the EU ambassadors in Vilnius in November.
«The opposition is not serious and has no chance in any election. Lukashenko would win, gaining 99% of the votes, but he’ll win with only 75% to cater to the EU,» a diplomat, present at a meeting, quoted the Lithuanian president’s words.
