A Deaf-and-Dumb Detained by Minsk Police for Shouting Anti-Government Slogans, Media

Belarusian police detained a deaf-and-dumb man, allegedly shouting anti-government slogans during a crackdown of the opposition rally in Minsk after the presidential elections. Tuesday, December 21, the Central district court of Minsk heard the case of some Antonov S., who, according to the police report, had participated in an unsanctioned rally and shouted anti-government slogans.

The detainee was sent back to prison, and protocols — to the police for revision.

Earlier the Belarusian human rights center «Viasna» stated that 17 people, including six opposition presidential candidates, were charged in Minsk under Article 293 of the Criminal Code («Riots») and they could face up to 15 years imprisonment.

Belarus held presidential elections on December 19, in which, according to official data, Alexander Lukashenko won a landslide victory with more than 79% of the votes. According to the human rights defenders, around 50% of people voted for the incumbent president.

After the elections thousands of opposition supporters held an unauthorized rally at Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk, and then attempted to capture the Government House. The action was suppressed by the internal troops and Special Forces.
