All Belarusian Banks Switched into New Exchange Rates

May 16, all Belarusian banks switched into new exchange rates. So, the dollar rate is now about Br4.5 thousand at exchange points, euro — Br6.4 thousand, the Russian ruble — Br160. Former exchange rates (about Br4 per dollar, about Br5.6 thousand — per euro and about Br142 per Russian ruble) have not been kept in any of the Belarusian banks.

May 17, the official rate of National Bank is equal to Br4.4 per euro, Br3.1 thousand per dollar and Br111 per Russian ruble.

Population 1.5 Times Increased Currency Purchases

January-April 2011, citizens of Belarus increased purchase of currency from banks in 1.5 times compared to the same period of 2010 ($2.633 billion in the equivalent against $1.761 billion). In this case, Belarusian banks have bought foreign currency in cash in approximately 7.6 times less than in March 2011 because of the currency crisis in April 2011, reports InfoBank.by.

Population’s currency sale has also increased for the first quarter of 2011 (by 9.8% to $2.15 billion), having still thrice gone down in April compared with March.

It has resulted in the negative balance of sale / purchase of foreign currency, equal to minus $483 million, whereas in January-April 2010 it was positive (plus $197 million).
