Counterfeit Russian rubles have been increasingly identified in Belarus. The country recorded 1.19 thousand facts of counterfeiting during the first 9 months of 2010, of which about 45% were related to the Russian rubles. This tendency became evident against the background of reducing the incidence of fake U.S. dollars and Euros, the Interior Ministry said.

As it became known to Telegraf, 72 criminal cases were brought to seize counterfeit Russian banknotes for only 20 days of October: 7 cases of RUB 5 thousand and 65 cases of RUB 1 thousand. Bad money usually «emerges» in Minsk, as well as in border areas with Russia (Vitebsk, Homel and Mahileu).

Typically, fake Russian currency is made on an inkjet printer and consists of two sheets glued together. Most fakes are imported from Russian migrant workers, businessmen, leaving for commodity, citizens, making tourist and guest trips, the Interior Ministry informed.

Such a trend has been observed since 2007 and, according to experts, is associated with open borders and a high degree of integration within the CIS.
