Another Contender for Belarus' Presidency Appeared

Chairman of the Board of the Association of Small and Medium Business, Viktor Tereshchenko, announced his desire to run for presidency. It was reported by his colleague, Artyom Sharkov. It is known that the aspirant for presidency of Belarus positions himself as "non-radical oppositionist".

Potential candidate does not set a target to win the elections in any case. According to Artyom Sharkov, the main goal is to be in the top three of voting results, Nasha Niva informs.

Viktor Tereshchenko was born in Krasnapolle district. He got economy education — firstly, in Gomel State University, then in International Management Institute in Kiev. In 1992 — 2004 he headed the International Institute of Management. For some time he worked in the presidential administration, was a member of the Supreme Council of Belarus of the 13th convocation. Now, potential presidential candidate is 60, a member of no party.

This is already the third attempt of Viktor Tereshchenko to become the head of state. He first announced his candidacy in 1994, but when collecting signatures he withdrew and supported Alexander Lukashenko, who subsequently became the president. The second time he announced his candidacy in 2001. But then he failed to collect required 100 thousand votes.

As Telegraf previously reported, some opposition leaders have already expressed their interest in running for presidency. They are the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus, Sergei Gaidukevich, first deputy chairman of Belarusian Party «The Greens», Yuri Glushakov, leader of «Tell the truth!» public campaign, Uladzimir Niaklajeu, deputy chairman of the United Civil Party, Jaroslav Romanchuk, leader of  European Belarus civil initiative, Andrei Sannikov, member of unregistered party Belarusian Christian Democracy, Vital Rymasheuski, former deputy chairman of the BPF Party, Ales Mikhalevich, deputy chairman of the BPF Party, Grigory Kostusev.

The leader of For Freedom (Za Svabodu) Movement, Alexander Milinkevich, who became the single candidate from the democratic opposition in presidential elections- 2006, has not decided on his participation in the current election campaign so far. He is going to announce his decision after the announcement of the exact date of elections.

Opposition politician, Alexander Kozulin, has neither determined with the participation in elections. «I can participate in elections only when I realize that you can really solve some serious issues, achieve results and lead to changes ripe in our society», former presidential candidate explained his position.

At the same time, some opposition representatives expressed their readiness to boycott current presidential elections. Thus, the CCP BPF «Adradzhenne», headed by Zianon Pazniak, does not intend to participate in the upcoming presidential campaign. «Elections — without Lukashenko, with Lukashenko — boycott!», the party described its position.
