Chargé d'Affaires of Belarus in Japan Viacheslav Beskosti reported that at least three Belarusian citizens are currently in the Japanese city of Sendai, most affected by the earthquake and tsunami. One of the Belarusians, Yulia Smirnova, managed to contact relatives. The fate of the other two Belarusians hasn't yet known.

Viacheslav Beskosti informed that the Russian consul left for Sendai on March 13. The situation might clear up after the trip. Currently, communication with the area, affected by the earthquake and tsunami, is missing, BelTA informs.

Viacheslav Beskosti also said that the Belarusian embassy had managed to establish contact with two citizens of Belarus, who had missed their flight due to traffic jams. They are currently in the airport, waiting for a flight to Moscow.

Meanwhile, the embassy still has no information about the Belarusian victims of the disaster. Viacheslav Beskosti has noted that the embassy is in constant communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. According to them, there are no injured or killed foreign nationals. Viacheslav Beskosti reported that about 30 of the Belarusians, living in different regions of Japan, have already contacted the embassy, reporting that they are all right.

Rescue operations are being currently carried out at the crash site in Japan. According to the official figures, the number of dead in the disaster is already over 2 thousand, while 10 thousand people are reported as missing.

As Telegraf previously reported, there was an earthquake of 8.9 points in the northeast of Japan on March 11. Its epicenter was 373 km northeast of Tokyo with the focus at the depth of 24 km. Soon, there were shortly several more powerful aftershocks of 6 of magnitude in the same area, the epicenter of one of them was only 67 km from Tokyo. The magnitude of the strongest aftershock reached 7.1.

The earthquake has caused strong tsunami with the tidal wave height over 10 feet in some areas of Japan. The tsunami has swept away houses and cars on the road. The giant wave has covered fields and roads, destroying buildings and structures. The Government of Japan has established a national headquarters for disaster relief.
