To save money on training athletes, in Belarus it's decided to carry out their selection basing on DNA testing. Test systems which allow to determine on the gene level the ability for particular kind of sports, are developed by the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences.
According to Ezhednevnik information, the tests have already been tested and began to be produced industrially. According to the staff of the Institute, conducted studies at the level of teams of Belarus have shown that it is possible to predict with very high degree of confidence who of young athletes will be promising in a certain kind of sports, and who will not.
For the present, there are tests, aimed to study some selected genes. But in the future, it will focus on creating individual genetic «profiles» of athletes. This «profile» will not only reveal a predisposition to particular sports, but also select more efficiently physical activity, diet, training regime. All this, according to the scientists, will help to improve results in almost all kinds of sports.
