Abkhaz President, Sergei Bagapsh, hopes that Ukraine and Belarus will recognize the independence of this Caucasian republic. He stated this on Thursday, April 29, speaking to representatives of leading Russian mass media.

«I am wary optimistic about this [the possible recognition of Abkhazia on the part of Ukraine]. It is very important that Ukraine to be ready to recognize us. That Belarus finally makes up its mind to solve this issue», Bagapsh said.

President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, responding in Strasbourg the question about recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by Kiev, said that he was against applying double standards in this matter and suggested to define the criteria for granting of independence and to develop an approach to solve problems of frozen conflicts.

As for Belarus, then, president Alexander Lukashenko said that the decision should be taken by the parliament.

Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008 after a military conflict with Georgia. Besides Moscow, its new status was recognized by Venezuela, Nicaragua and the Republic of Nauru. Georgia insists that the breakaway republics are included in its composition.

In September of the last year, an independent EU commission released a report on the war in the Caucasus, where it says that the shelling of Tskhinvali by Georgian forces on the night of August 7 to 8, 2008 marked the beginning of large-scale armed conflict, though it was only the culmination of a long period of tensions, provocations and incidents’ intensification.
