Belarus among High-Literacy Countries, UN

According to the UNDP report on Human Development in 2010, Belarus is among countries with high adult literacy rate — 99.7%. This was stated by the representative of Belarus to the UN, Zoya Kollontai, speaking at the 55th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. She also noted that the country had fulfilled the Millennium Development Goal ahead, having reached general primary education.

So, according to Zoya Kollontai, in Belarus, 100% of children are enrolled in primary and basic secondary education. «We note with satisfaction that the report of UN Secretary-General to the 55th session of the Commission on the Status of Women reflected the information of the Republic of Belarus on national experience in the field of gender equality, including the creation of conditions and employment opportunities for women,» said the representative of Belarus, the UN News Center.

Zoya Kollontai said that the country’s women and men had equal conditions for the choice of profession, specialty, access to education and the achievement of diplomas in all schools. In addition, the proportion of women among graduate students is up to 58.4%, Candidates — 36.9%, Ph.D — 16.8%.

Also, the diplomat said that in Belarus there were local resource centers for training women in the basics of entrepreneurship to support them in starting their own business. As a consequence, there were about 47% women among people, received loans and grants for entrepreneurial activity in 2010.
