Belarus and Syria Are Going to Develop Their Relations to the Level of Strategic Partnership

Belarus and Syria confirmed their intention to bring the relations between the two countries to a qualitatively new level of strategic partnership in order to use considerable potential of bilateral cooperation. It was stated in joint declaration of the presidents of Belarus and Syria, reported in the press service of Belarusian leader.

Moreover, Belarus and Syria noted with satisfaction active development of direct mutually beneficial cooperation of both countries’ economic entities and marked the need to expand it.

«The parties confirmed their intention to continue the preparation of transition to free trade regime between Belarus and Syria and to contribute mutual promotion of goods and services in national markets. In this regard, the Belarusian side supported the desire of the Syrian side to form free trade zone between Syria and all the member countries of the Customs Union (Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan)», informed in the Administration of Alexander Lukashenko.

Belarus and Syria also confirmed the priority of joint investment projects in the field of mechanical engineering, as well as the importance to expand cooperation in agriculture, housing construction, petrochemistry, etc.

Belarus supports the idea to create a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East

Furthermore, Belarus and Syria confirmed the need for Israeli troops withdrawal from Syrian Golan Heights and other Arab territories, occupied since June 4, 1967, the settlement of Palestinian refugees problem, as well as creation of independent Palestinian state in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly.

«The Belarusian side, who voluntarily renounced possession of nuclear weapons, supports the idea of creating a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East in accordance with the project, introduced by the Syrian side into the UN Security Council in 2003. Both sides called to universalize the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, stressed that Israel should join this treaty as a non-nuclear state and set its nuclear facilities under IAEA control», underlined in the Administration of the head of state.

In addition, both parties confirmed the right of all countries, including Iran, to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and stressed their commitment to resolve the issue of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program only through diplomatic channels.
