Belarus Cancels Flights to Europe Because of Volcano

Minsk National Airport has canceled several flights to Europe because a cloud of ashes formed by volcanic eruption in Iceland on April 15. "Belavia flight to London was canceled, as well as flights to Riga, which AirBaltic company provides, and Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt. There is still a question, if there will be other flights", informed at the airport.

As Belavia director general, Igor Cherginets, said, the decision to cancel the flight Minsk — London — Minsk B2 851/852, scheduled for the morning of April 16, was taken last night. «All passengers are offered to postpone their trips on the next flight — scheduled for Sunday — with no additional payments. If passengers want, they can postpone their trips for later flights,» BelTA quotes the words of national airline’s director general.

The airport reported that flights to Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Paris are also disputable. «Aviation in Belarus following the situation in these airports and routes of aircrafts’ flights», airport administration underlines.

According to the duty, the flights are in the plan, but the decision about going out will be taken basing on the situation with the movement of volcanic clouds. «We watch the cloud movement, the wind direction. Weather service will inform us about it», he said.

At National Airport also reported, that the airport is ready to accept aircrafts, strayed from its route due to ashes clouds, and that the airport is working in normal regime now. «The aircraft’s flight is impossible through such a cloud, because there is danger that the dust gets to the engine and stops it», explained at the airport.
