Belarus' GDP to Grow by 160% in Next Five-Year Plan, Sidorsky

Belarus' Prime Minister, Sergei Sidorsky, reported to the President Alexander Lukashenko on preparation of documents on the development of the country's economy to 2011-2015. According to the head of the government, in general, the Council of Ministers sets a task to increase gross domestic product in next five-year plan by more than 160%, compared to the current five-year plan.

Such indicators will be achieved through active development of industry, agriculture, investment, and the emphasis is made on foreign direct investment and use of industrial enterprises potential.

The government also expects to develop more actively the privatization of enterprises, which need modernization of technical and technological processes and tools, the Council of Ministers is planning to attract direct investment for these purposes.

Soon, there will be created an additional list of companies, which should receive the accelerated development with element of economic regulation in next five-year plan, the Prime Minister said, noting that five enterprises had been already put for sale this year in accordance with the agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Sidorsky told Lukashenko on the progress in economy in the first six months

Sergei Sidorsky also informed Alexander Lukashenko about the implementation of forecast indicators of economy in the first half of 2010. In particular, the prime minister stressed that the inflation rate for six months amounted to only 4.1%, while during the same period of last year, the rate of its growth reached 7.3%. According to the head of the government, for the year, the rise in prices in the country should not exceed 10%.

Among positive results in the first half of the year, the prime minister noted the lead of export growth over import figures (27-29% against 12-15%), what was achieved due to enter to new outlets for Belarusian goods.

«Over six months of 2010, imports flow to the country has been reduced by 500 million dollars. In 2013, there is a goal to reach zero balance, and then ensure positive balance of foreign trade. To do this, it’s necessary to speed up import substitution», Sergei Sidorsky said.

The head of stated was also reported that in the first half of the year, there commissioned 3.2 million square meters of housing, and in total for the year it is to be built over six million square meters of housing, 9.1 million square meters of housing — next year. The main emphasis will be placed on the construction of social housing, reducing the queue of citizens in need, Belarusian prime minister reported.

As of the pace of investment growth, then by the end of the year, it is planned to reach the level of more than 120% compared to 2009. As Sergei Sidorsky stressed, there are all reasons. The president was reported on the completion of the implementation of innovative program, designed for 2007-2010. During this time, in the country there were built 185 new enterprises and productions, technically modernized 343 existing productions.

The head of the government also said that for next five-year plan they set even more ambitious targets on innovative development of economy. Thus, there introduced an indicator of innovative products in total products shipped for export. According to the Council of Ministers, it is to stimulate Belarusian producers to improve production and produce more competitive goods.
