Belarus takes the tenth place in the ranking of most drinking countries in the world, compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the WHO statistics, there is 15.13 liters of alcohol per capita in Belarus, that is 2.5 times more than the world average.

According to the WHO report, citizens of Moldova drink more than others. The average Moldovan drink 18.22 liters of alcohol a year. The other top ten drinking countries are Czech Republic (16.45 liters of alcohol per person per year), Hungary (16.27 liters), Russia (15.76 liters), Ukraine (15.6 liters), Estonia (15 57 liters), Andorra (15.48 liters), Romania (15.3 liters), Slovenia (15.19 liter) and Britain (13.37 liters).
The most dangerous forms of alcoholism, according to the WHO experts, are in Russia and Ukraine, where people prefer stong drinks. Meanwhile, in Belarus, 43% of the population prefer vodka, more than 28% prefer «cheap wine», 20% beer, 9% wine.
According to WHO, 2.5 million people throughout the world die each year of the harmful use of alcohol.  320 thousand young people aged 15-29 years (9% of all deaths in this age group) die of the causes related to alcohol. Alcohol is the cause of death in 6.2% of cases among males and 1.1% of cases among women.
It should be noted that in 2010 the World Health Organization adopted a resolution approving a global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. According to this resolution, it is recommended to the countries to strengthen national responses to problems in public health caused by harmful use of alcohol. Nevertheless, the WHO reports that most countries do not rush to impose more stringent controls on the use of alcoholic beverages.
