Belarus Never Played up for Opportunistic Reasons, Lukashenko

At the meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat on April 28 President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, speaking about the interaction between the two countries in the international arena, said that Belarus was "always ready to lend a shoulder to Turkmenistan in any situation." "Belarus has never played up for opportunistic reasons", the Belarusian leader said. 

In turn, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Belarus is for Turkmenistan, «a friend and important partner in the political arena». The head of Turkmenistan noted the proximity of two countries’ positions on major issues of joint action to strengthen international peace and security, to resist the challenges of modernity. He also drew attention to the close cooperation within international organizations, including the CIS, OSCE and UN. 
As reported in the Administration of the Belarusian leader, during the current visit to Turkmenistan, President Alexander Lukashenko held talks with his Turkmen counterpart both in one-on-one and in expanded format. The focus of the talks the sides discussed was development of bilateral economic and trade relations, implementing of major projects in petrochemical area, mining, as well as supplies of the Belarusian machine-building equipment. 
Alexander Lukashenko noted that Belarus and Turkmenistan were developing relations on the principles of strategic partnership and alliance. Following the talks, the sides signed several bilateral agreements. The heads of state signed a joint communique in which they expressed their intention to seek and develop new forms of economic cooperation between the countries. According to the document the parties confirm their mutual interest in deepening relations in education, science, culture, arts, tourism and sport. 
Among other documents signed by the Belarusian delegation was a program of cooperation of foreign ministries of both countries in 2011 — 2012, the cooperation agreement of the finance ministries, intergovernmental agreement on mutual provision of land for placement of the Belarusian Embassy in Turkmenistan and the Turkmen embassy in Belarus. 
On Friday, 29 April, Alexander Lukashenko and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov plan to continue negotiations.
