Belarus Not to Purchase Bread Grain

Belarus will ensure itself by its own bread grain in full and therefore will not purchase it abroad. It was reported on August 26 in "Topical interview" show of Belarusian TV by Vice Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Vladimir Gusakov.

«We have our own domestic resistant varieties suitable both for baking bread and for pasta production», the specialist said.

According to him, the process of import substitution is ensured by new wheat varieties selected by Belarusian scientists, and it is not worse than its foreign analogues in its consumer properties.

As Vladimir Gusakov stated, earlier, to bake bread Belarus had bought hard varieties of wheat. However, in the past three years, the country fully meets its needs in bread wheat and has purchased only a slight amount of grain to enhance baking properties of flour.

At the same time, Belarus sold in international market about the same amount of own grain and ensured a kind of export-import operations’ offset. Rye production’s amounts have been always high enough in the country, the professor said.
