Belarus Prepared Retaliatory Sanctions against EU and U.S.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus has prepared a response to the U.S. and EU's visa and economic sanctions, imposed on the Belarusian officials and President Alexander Lukashenko. The list of banned from entering Belarus comprises individuals who "take destructive actions against Belarus and damage international cooperation."

In addition, as a response to the Western sanctions, Belarusian authorities will tighten control over illegal financing of political activity in Belarus by foreign socio-political associations and foundations, as well as their representatives, said Head of Information Ministry of Belarus Andrei Savinykh on March 22.

At the same time, as he says, Belarus will continue contacts with the Western partners, but the visits of American and European-level political delegation to our country will be carried out at an invitation from the legislative and executive authorities of Belarus.

«The Republic of Belarus reserves the right to retaliatory restrictive measures in response to other actions of the U.S. and the EU. However, Belarus remains open for the resumption of constructive dialogue and cooperation,» said Belarus’s Foreign Ministry spokesman.

As Telegraf previously reported, March 21, the EU decided to expand the list of banned Belarusian officials «in connection with the deteriorating situation of human rights in Belarus.»

158 Belarusian officials have got under the EU visa sanctions since February 2. People, included in the list (including the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko), are banned from entering the EU territory. In addition, economic sanctions have also been introduced in respect of 157 persons from this list — the EU has frozen all their assets and economic resources.
