Belarus Ranks 36th in Europe for Food Costs

Belarus ranks 36th out of 38 positions in the food expenditure ranking among the European countries. According to statistics, the share of food expenditure in the structure of Belarusians' consumer expenditure makes 39.2%. Only residents of Moldova (40.8%) and Ukraine (50%) spend more money on food than Belarusians.

Experts of the Center for Economic Analysis «RIA-Analytics» carried out investigation of the consumer spending structure based on official statistics for 2009 — 2010, RIA «Novosti.»

According to the experts, food spending is low enough in countries with high standards of living. According to the survey, Luxembourg spends the least on food (about 8.1% of revenue), Britain (8.5%) and Ireland (8.6%). The top five rankings also include Austria (9.6%) and Germany (9.8%).

In general, residents of the European Union, which occupied the entire top of the table rankings, spend about a quarter of their expenditure on food. The only exception is Romania with 26.6% food spending and Macedonia (30.5%).

Parallel to this, the researchers found out the proportion of Europeans’ expenditure on alcohol. According to the analysis of statistical data, wine-producing countries with their own cheap alcohol spend the least on alcohol — Italy (0.7% of total costs), Spain (0.8%) and Greece (0.9%).

Residents of Estonia spend most on alcoholic beverages — 5.8% of total expenditure, as well as Hungary — 5.3%, Lithuania — 4.7% and Latvia — 4.3%. Belarusians spend 2.1% of their income on alcohol on average.
