Belarus Restricted Import of Poultry Products from Sweden

Chief Veterinary Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Belarus introduced temporary restrictions on import of poultry products from the Swedish island of Gotland on February 8, 2011 due to the cases of bird Newcastle disease, registered in the region. This was reported in the Ministry of Agriculture. 

Temporary restrictions are related to import of live birds, eggs, fluff, feathers, poultry meat and all kinds of poultry products, feed and feed additives in poultry. Besides, Ministry canceled the permits for import of used equipment for birds’ maintenance, slaughtering and butchering.

Belarus has introduced similar time restrictions on poultry products from the Department Cote d’Armor (France) and Llama region Cajamarca (Peru) due to Newcastle disease since January 19, 2011.

Newcastle disease, also known as avian pneumoencephalitis, is a highly contagious viral infection, characterized by pneumonia, encephalitis, multiple petechial hemorrhages and damage internal organs. The disease causes great economic damage and is considered as a particularly dangerous infections.

As Telegraf previously reported, the Belarusian authorities have formerly imposed a ban on the import of livestock products and feed from Bulgaria because of the animal foot-and-mouth disease.
