Head of information department — spokesman of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, Andrei Savinykh, commented on the summit on nuclear security issues, passed on April 12-13 at the U.S., in which Belarus did not participate. "Washington's selective approach to the invitation of the states is perplexing and regrettable", the spokesman said.

According to Andrei Savinykh, it «is also counterproductive in terms of reliability of nuclear security assurances for the states, which renounced the possession of nuclear weapons», the press service of Foreign Ministry informs.

«Belarus certainly supports the need to strengthen nuclear security and combat nuclear terrorism, nuclear non-proliferation, that is, as it was stated, the subject of the Washington summit, and hopes for the success of all international efforts in this direction», reads the commentary of the head of information department.

«However, the stated goals of the summit, do not seem to correlate well with selected by Washington composition of the event participants, which is not universal and does not include the full range of fundamental actors of international efforts in this area», Andrei Savinykh said.

According to MFA Press Secretary, Belarus has «its fundamentally important contribution to nuclear disarmament, was the first and voluntarily renounced of existed strategic nuclear offensive capabilities». «Belarus continues to play a significant role in the sphere of non-proliferation, safeguard of nuclear materials and counter nuclear terrorism through the responsible fulfillment of international obligations»,  representative of Foreign Ministry said.

«In our opinion, true success in combating such global phenomenon as terrorism — including nuclear — as well as reducing the threat of nuclear materials proliferation, is possible only through the collective efforts of international community’s members», Andrei Savinykh summed up.
