Belarus Shows Five-Fold Currency Demand Increase in October

Net purchases of foreign currency (cash and noncash) in Belarus was $317.2 million in October 2010 along, whereas only $62.8 million was bought in September. Thus, citizens of Belarus have recently acquired 5.1 times more net currency in October than in September and almost twice more than in August.

Net demand for cash currency in October amounted to $253 million, which is 11 times more than in September, IA «REGNUM-Belarus» reported, with reference to the Statistical Report of the National Bank of Belarus of November 12.

In addition, there was $2.5 million of foreign currency net supply by the population during January-September 2010 against $850.9 million of net purchases during the same period in 2009. In 2009 the citizens of Belarus bought $838.5 million on a net basis, which is 1.5 times more than in 2008.
