Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Criticizes WTO

Belarus is extremely concerned about the tightening of the negotiations on accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).That was declared by Sergei Aleinik, Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus, at the plenary session of UN General Assembly on September 28. According to him, delaying negotiations is "tantamount to discrimination against some states."

«The negotiation process for accession to the World Trade Organization of about three dozen states lasts More than ten years. Is this normal?» Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs asked.
Today 30 countries outside the WTO, are observers and are in talks about joining the organization.  Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Algeria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan are among them. Discussion of the adoption of the WTO (which now totals 153 members) takes place within the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations.
According to Sergei Aleinik, Belarus, like many other countries, is concerned about the current state of the Doha Round, «especially recent trends towards the hardening of positions of the developed countries.» «In particular, the developing nations and middle-income countries suffer from that. Therefore, we believe that the rules of entry of interested countries in this organization should be significantly revised to simplify», Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus said.
Developed countries force price pressure on smaller states, Aleinik
In addition, Sergei Aleinik drew the attention of the organization management that «the developed countries imposed unusually harsh protectionist measures in international trade, they intensified price pressure on small and medium states on sensitive groups of commodities.»
Among other important issues, the representative of Belarus mentioned ecology problems and the fight against climate change. So, Sergei Aleinik stressed the need for post-Kyoto international agreement and the creation of promising international interaction mechanism to increase the availability of advanced energy technologies, including the use of new technologies and renewable energy sources.
In addition, as reported by the Foreign Ministry, Deputy Minister referred the issues of recovery of the regions affected by the Chernobyl disaster 1986. According to Sergei Aleinik, success in overcoming the consequences of Chernobyl corresponds to the interests of the entire international community.
In this regard, the Deputy Minister said that Belarus, Russia and Ukraine plan to put before the UN General Assembly resolution on strengthening international cooperation to study, mitigate and minimize the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.
