Belarusian General Prosecutor's Office received a request of Kyrgyz authorities to extradite the president of this country, Kurmanbek Bakiyev. As the head of Information Department of General Prosecutor's Office, Pyotr Kiselev, reported on May 11, the request came by fax.

Pyotr Kiselev explained that to consider the issue of Bakiyev’s extradition, Belarus needs not only a request but the criminal case material. «So far, we received only a request and we expect additional documents come in the near future», RIA Novosti quotes the head of information department of general prosecutor’s office.

Pyotr Kiselev added that the general prosecutor’s office will decide on the guilt of Bakiyev and depending on the guilt degree they may agree to extradite him.

As Telegraf previously reported, general prosecutor’s office of Kyrgyzstan sent Belarus a request for extradition of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev on May 6. It was reported on Friday, May 7, by the deputy prime minister of interim government, who is in charge of law enforcement agencies, Azim Nazarov.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev was forced to leave the country after the mass riots began in Kyrgyzstan on April 6. The reason for the demonstrations was the detention of almost all opposition leaders.

April 20, Alexander Lukashenko informed that Kyrgyzstan’s president is in Minsk under the protection of Belarus. Bakiyev himself declared that he had not resigned from the post of the president of the republic, and called on world leaders not to recognize the interim government of Kyrgyzstan. May 4, the president of Belarus stated that he was not going to leave Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s for interim government of Kyrgyzstan.
