Belarusian opposition leader Alexander Lukin and his wife fled to Poland on Wednesday, May 4, after the Belarusian border guards' attempt to detain them at a checkpoint in the village Slavatichy.

As reported by the Polish media, the Lukins crossed the border towards Belarus on Wednesday afternoon. Belarusian border guards tried to detain them during their passing from Poland to Belarus, but they fled into the Polish offices and are still there.

According to the Polish border service, the Lukins left two their children together with the driver of the car, a citizen of Lithuania, on the Belarusian territory. Currently, Polish and Belarusian border guards have been negotiating in the village Slavatichy to resolve the situation, according to RIA «Novosti.»

Lukin is a supporter of the former presidential candidate, Andrei Sannikov. He was detained for 15 days for participating in opposition demonstrations on the day of presidential elections in Belarus in December 2010. After that he went to France. May 4, he tried to return home.

As Telegraf previously reported, in March, the Czech Republic granted ex-presidential candidate Ales Michalevic status of a political refugee. The opposition leader explained his escape from the country by the fear for life. He also claimed earlier that tortures had been actively used in KGB jail in Minsk, where he was released from.
