Belarusian Policeman Sentenced to 18 Years in Jail for Killing of a Girl

Homel Regional Court of First Instance sentenced a former police inspector of Rahachou department of interior affaires on December 10, who had fatally shot a 22-year-old woman from the village of Novia Zhuravichy in July 2010. A 34-year old man was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment at a reinforced regime colony with deprivation of his captain rank.

Furthermore, according to the sentence, the man will be obliged to pay Br70 to the parents of the dead girl in compensation for moral damages. The convicted may appeal against the verdict within 10 days, BelTA informs.

The former policeman partially admitted his guilt. He believes that he had violated only instructions for storage and use of weapons, and pleaded not guilty for murder attempt, being accused of. According to the man, he just wanted to show the girl government-issue weapon, when a spontaneous shot happened.

Prosecutor Insisted on a More Severe Punishment

In turn, the state prosecutor is convinced that the murder had been committed out of malicious motives. Prosecutor insisted on a 20-year imprisonment. The defense, on the contrary, insisted on «negligent homicide», thus questioning witnesses.

According to Telegraf, a tragedy occurred in the village of Dousk Rahachou district, Homel region at about 23:00 on July 6. District police officer fired his government-issue weapon out of the official car and seriously wounded a 22-year-old local girl. She died in district intensive care hospital on July 16. As it was later found out, the convicted policeman had been drunk.

Interior Minister of Belarus took the case under its personal control and initiated an official investigation. As a result, more than 30 employees and heads of interior departments were brought to book.
