Belarusian Population Declined by 18.9 Thousand in 2010, Belstat

According to the National Statistics Committee of Belarus the country's population amounted to 9481.1 thousand people on January 1, 2011.The population of Belarus declined by 18.9 thousand people in 2010. Mortality rate is still high. Thus, despite the positive migration gain of above 10.3 thousand people, the number of deaths is 29.1 thousand more than the number of births.

108.1 thousand children were born in Belarus in 2010, that is 1.1 thousand children fewer than in 2009. In this case, 2.2 thousand more people died, totaling 137.3 thousand people. Natural decline in population was 29.2 thousand people.

Migration gain amounted to more than 10.3 thousand people in 2010: 17.1 thousand people came to the country and 6.8 thousand people left.

In addition, the National Statistical Committee reports that the number of registered marriages decreased by 1.5% in 2010 against 2009. The number of divorces, on the contrary, increased by 4.6%. Thus, the marriage-divorce ratio worsened in 2010: 472 divorces accounted for a thousand marriages, while there were 445 divorces in 2009.
