CEC First Meeting on Elections to Be Held on September 15

The first meeting of the Central Electoral Committee of Belarus on the presidential elections is scheduled for September 15. It was announced on September 14 by CEC Chairperson, Lydia Yermoshina. According to her, at the first meeting CEC will consider main documents essential for holding elections.

In particular, on September 15,  CEC plans to approve the budget of election campaign, schedule of events, methodological explanations and procedure to submit documents for registration of action groups, BelTA informs.

According to Lydia Yermoshina, Belarusian budget assigns Br37 billion to organize presidential elections. Including Br27 billion for the first round and about Br11 billion for the second.

Lydia Yermoshina also noted that the appointment of elections’ date for December 19 was «a predictable surprise» for her, since CEC suggested that elections would took place on a Sunday in December, because January was considered unsuitable for elections. According to CEC chair, if it is necessary, the second round of presidential elections may be held on December 26.

CEC will accept applications for participation in elections till September 24

As Lydia Yermoshina reported, aspirants for presidency of Belarus should submit an application for registration of action groups within ten days from the date of elections date appointment, that is not later than September 24.

Within five days after that, CEC must register action groups of contenders, and then, from September 30, there may begin the collection of signatures for the nomination of candidates. Under the law, the presidential candidate may be the one who gather at least 100 thousand signatures.

Belarus to invite international observers in near future, Yermoshina

Lydia Yermoshina also reported that in coming days or weeks Belarus to invite international observers who will monitor the preparation and holding of presidential elections. According to her, Belarusian Foreign Ministry will send invitations to international organizations involved in observing elections. International structures define observing format themselves, basing on their own strategy, CEC head noted.
