Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina reported that the CEC had made the advance of the subscription lists of 10 candidates for the presidency. "Not to squander paper", Lidia Yermoshina explained. CEC head assured that if there are more applicants, CEC will produce additional necessary documents as soon as possible".

However, Lidia Yermoshina noted that there had been much more candidates during previous presidential campaigns. So, the CEC received 21 application for registration of action groups in 1994, 26 applications in 2001. However, only 18 action groups remained in 2001, since the others refused to gather signatures. «Everything happened more rapidly. Though, we may probably compare with the 2006 election. There were eight groups at that time,» Lidia Yermoshina said.

The head of the CEC does not deny the possibility that the Central Election Commission will receive five or six applications more in the last days of registration of action groups, «Komsomolskaya Pravda v Belorusii» reports.

Lidia Yermoshina explained that many of the presidential nominees had preferred to postpone the registration on the last day. «I’ve even been asked about the hour we finish our work. I said at 7:00 p.m., and then we will be closed», the CEC chairman said.

Lidia Yermoshina also explained the situation with the registration of Uladzimir Niaklajeu, leader of «Tell the truth!» civil campaign, who had lived abroad for some time.

«It’s a difficult situation. I have discussed it with lawyers. We will examine why he didn’t live in Belarus, whether he worked, how often he used to come back, what he left here. After all, the students, who study abroad, are registered parliamentary candidates . It is necessary to receive explanations of the person. We may request also the Committee of Border Troops to examine  the information they have. It is not yet possible to give a definite answer», Lidia Yermoshina said.

As Telegraf informed, some experts believe that the fact, that in the late 1990’s Uladzimir Niaklajeu lived in Poland and Finland for some time, may prevent him from becoming a candidate. According to Belarusian legislation, contender for the presidency should be a permanent resident of Belarus for at least ten years preceding the election.
