The Ministry of Health of Belarus received the document on the approval for sale of French tablets, undergoing abortions up to six weeks. Belarusian orthodox priests were against this drug imports to Belarus.

Head of the Enlightenment and Charity Center «All the griving’s joy» Matvei Rodov says that priests are worried that this method of pregnancy termination can be offered to adolescent girls who are too easily to react to this procedure, «Komsomolskaya Pravda in Belarus» reports.

«It is enough to drink a pill and not even to think about the pregnancy continuation. A woman, chosen this way, will see the dead child with his arms and legs herself. It can become a great tragedy and shock for her,» Matvei said.

PhD, a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist Elena Nikitina agrees with the opinion of the priests in this matter. «Six weeks pregnancy seems a very small period for many women. But the priests are right here, and, by interrupting the six weeks pregnancy, a woman, thus, kills the embryo, that has already turned into a child with all the organs, arms and legs as well. Doctors reiterate that it’s much better to use contraceptives to prevent an unwanted pregnancy than to terminate it afterwards,» the expert said.

However, according to experts, this method of abortion is not more secure than abortion. «It is the same as the abortion itself, just without surgery, which is certainly a plus. But this method of abortion is not safe. There can be possible complications: bleeding, the fetus may not fully come out, which requires additional surgery,» Elena Nikitina explained.

Abortion Pills No Cheaper than Abortion

However, if the Ministry of Health authorizes the French drug sale, its cost won’t, obviously, be cheap. For example, in Russia, these tablets cost about Br700 thousand. Abortion or vacuum cost is approximately the same in the private medical center in Minsk.

Pregnancy medical termination has been used for quite a long period of time in Russia and the West. However, pharmacies do not sell abortion pills — these drugs are sold exclusively by medical institutions, licensed to abortion. During treatment the patient must be under supervision at the clinic for 4 hours. In addition, this method is not recommended for women above 35 years, with renal failure, breast feeding, as well as active smokers.

It is noteworthy that  this year in Belarus is the last one in the National Program of Demographic Security of the country. The Ministry of Health coordinates the implementation of the program, aimed to improve reproductive health, promote fertility and strengthen the family, maternal and child health.
