Commander of the Air Force and Air Defense of Belarus, major-general Igor Azarenok was detained by prosecutors. He is suspected of committing a crime under Article 455 of the Penal Code of Belarus (Abuse of power or dereliction). Investigation is currently underway, the Defense Department said.

«Under Article 26 of the Constitution, no person shall be convicted of a crime unless his guilt is proved and established by a valid court sentence in accordance with the law. The public will be informed about the outcome of the investigation and the corresponding decisions in the established order,» the ministry said.

As noted in the Defense Ministry, rule of law in any country is determined not by a certain crime rate but a crime control system to identify and stop any offense. «Such a system in Belarus, including the government security management system, has been established, got started and is producing concrete results,» the ministry said.

«For example, a number of criminological indicators of the level of crime in the Armed Forces is one of the lowest in the world. At the same time the inevitability of revenge and an uncompromising approach to perpetrators, regardless of their employment status and past achievements, are provided by legislation. All this indicates the purity of the authorities,» the Defense Department said.
