Deposits of Belarusian Population Are Growing Steadily, National Bank

In January — July 2010, Belarusian population's deposits in rubles and foreign currency grew by more than 3.4 trillion rubles (18.9%). Thus, at the beginning of August the amount of deposits totaled nearly 21.6 trillion rubles, reported in the information department of the National Bank of Belarus.

Over past seven months, deposits in national currency increased by 2.7 trillion rubles (34.1%) and amounted to more than 10.7 trillion rubles. Foreign currency deposits grew by $98.7 million (2.8%) and amounted to $3.64 billion. However, over the last month they increased by $149.7 million (4.3%). National currency deposits in July increased by more than 581 billion rubles (5.7%).

According to the National Bank of Belarus, the growth of deposits (especially in national currency) is a sign of «increasing public confidence in the banking system and carried weighted interest rate policy aimed at ensuring the profitability of savings and increased availability of credit resources». At the same time, interest rates on deposits in national currency remain attractive and exceed as inflation rate so and yield of savings in foreign currencies, noted in the main country’s bank.
