Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Lithuanian Seimas Emanuelis Zingeris has once again called upon the international community to support civil society and democratic movement in Belarus after a meeting with members of the U.S. House of Representatives. According to him, the country is "increasingly becoming the last dictatorship in Europe" after the presidential elections in December 2010.

Emanuelis Zingeris, an ardent supporter of the Belarusian opposition, met with American politicians and human rights defenders while on a visit to the United States and spoke about the situation in Belarus, IA «REGNUM-Belarus.«

As Telegraf previously reported, the United States held hearings on the situation in Belarus on April 1. The representative of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. State Department, Daniel Russell, said in his speech that the main objectives of the U.S. sanctions were to make «the authorities of Belarus release political prisoners and stop their persecution,» as well as «to help those Belarusians who aspire to Democracy.» But the main condition, called by the U.S. State Department for establishing relations between the countries, was the progress in democratic reforms and human rights in Belarus.
