EU Ambassadors in Belarus to Demand Opposition Detainees' Release

Representatives of the Hungarian Embassy in Belarus are preparing a statement on behalf of the European Union ambassadors, accredited in Belarus, to demand the immediate release of all political, as they believe, prisoners. This was stated by Hungarian Ambassador Ferenc Kontra at a meeting of EU ambassadors with representatives of the Belarusian society on January 4.

The meeting was held at the Hungarian Embassy. The wives of ex-presidential candidate Vladimir Niakliaeu and Dmitri Bonlarenko, chief of staff of former candidate Andrei Sannikov, chairman of the Belarusian intellectuals’ Rada Vladimir Kolos, head of Minsk organization PBNF Viktor Ivashkevich, chairman of the legal committee of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee Harry Pogonyailo attended the conference, the Belarusian service of Radio «Liberty» reports.

As stated at the meeting by Vladimir Kolos, the Belarusian authorities may try to use the prisoners as hostages for bargaining with Europe. He also noted that attempts by European politicians to improve relations with the Belarusian authorities, despite the previous violations of democratic norms, rule of law and human rights, had no results, BelaPAN.

«Lukashenko failed to get enough votes to win in the first round. The only way to force the dictator to give up repression is tough economic sanctions only,» the head of the Belarusian intellectuals’ Rada.
