President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated on November 25 that the current policy of the EU would never find understanding in Belarus. According to the president, the government will never allow "keeping us in suspense, dictating  conditions and even pushing us to action, to which we, to put it mildly, are not ready for objective reasons." "The EU must take this into account," the president said.

During an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro, President Alexander Lukashenko said the Belarusian government «more than disappointed» with the attitude of the European Union towards Belarus. «We all sometimes do not understand what the European Union wants. We are doing everything to ensure normal relations with our western neighbor. All our initiatives have always been primarily focused on establishing good relations with the European Union. Why the European Union respond to our initiatives in this way is again the question to them, not to us,» the President said.

At the same time Alexander Lukashenko stressed that Belarus is ready to learn from the EU in some areas. «We’re good pupils, we are ready to learn from you all, appealing to the interests of the Belarusian people, and that does not create problems for our neighbors, such as the European Union, Ukraine, Russia and other nations of the world,» the head of state said.

«I think that if the French president Nicolas Sarkozy were asked such a question and France were in the same position as Belarus, he would have said exactly the same,» the Belarusian leader emphasized.

Belarus’ Interests don’t Contradict the EU, Lukashenko

Alexander Lukashenko also promised to act in the interests of the Belarusian state and nation. «We have a country, we have the people, we announced the sovereignty and independence of this Belarusian state. It’s supported by the West. Therefore, we will act primarily in the interest of the Belarusian people, because we, as a country and the people who live in this country, have our own interests and those interests, we are not to blame here, do not contradict the European Union,» the president said.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that Belarus is ready to establish relations with the EU in any format. «Let’s build relationships either as part of the «Eastern Partnership», or directly the European Union — Belarus, or France — Belarus, as you wish,» the President said.

Specifically with respect to France, Alexander Lukashenko said that Belarus would like to develop relations with this country, however, much of this depends on the French side. «All this depends not on us, but on you. If you have the desire and willingness to cooperate with Belarus, we will respond immediately,» the Belarusian leader said.
