EU Summit Approved Sanctions against Belarusian Officials

Heads of State and Government of the European Union approved Resolution on Belarus, adopted on December 31 by the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, at the EU summit in Brussels on Friday, February 4. This decree provides for "restrictive measures," in particular, a visa ban on senior Belarusian officials' entry into the EU, as well as freezing of their bank assets in Europe.

«The European Union stated its determination to strengthen its commitment to the Belarusian civil society,» said in the conclusions of the EU summit, «Interfax» reports.

European Council reaffirmed its policy of «contacts at a critical position,» particularly in the framework of the «Eastern Partnership» provided for the Belarusian side’s respect of democratic principles, rule of law and human rights.

«The Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs will periodically review the situation in Belarus and is willing, if necessary, to provide other targeted sanctions in all areas,» underlined in the conclusions of the EU summit.

The EU decided to freeze all assets and economic resources (both personal belongings and those, under management and control) of 157 representatives of the Belarusian authorities. Visa sanctions were applied to 158 officials.

Yuri Sivakov, a former Interior Minister and former Minister of Sports and Tourism of Belarus, accused by the EU of laundering money for the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, did not get under the economic sanctions.
