Former Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus Stanislav Shushkevich believes that Europe, having entered into negotiations with the government of President Alexander Lukashenko, has betrayed the Belarusian democratic movement. According to the politician, Europe has offered the loan to Belarus in vain, hoping that the current government will follow the path of democratic reforms.

Stanislav Shushkevich believes that the incumbent government of Belarus are the «criminals in power, suppressing their own people and their best representatives.» According to the Belarusian opposition leader, Alexander Lukashenko is not stingy to fund police, thus having turned Belarus into a police state. So, according to Stanislav Shushkevich, a thousand people in the country accounts for 15 policemen — this ratio is 50% higher of the one in Russia, «Voice of America.»

Stanislav Shushkevich also believes that President Alexander Lukashenko has won the elections of December 19, 2010 by fraud and then has sent specially trained people to organize a provocation on the square in front of Government House.

Lukashenko to be Influenced Only by Sanctions, Shushkevich

Ex-chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus is convinced that the only way to influence the current leadership of the country is to impose sanctions, similar to those the U.S. has against the Belarusian officials.

According to Stanislav Shushkevich, Alexander Lukashenko can do nothing but rule and that is why he clings to power so pathologically. However, Alexander Lukashenko, according to opposition leader, rules the state «like a farm.»

As Telegraf previously reported, representatives of political parties and political associations of Belarus, among whom was Stanislav Shushkevich, had earlier appealed to the European Parliament and EU leaders with a statement about the need for «the most decisive actions» with regard to Belarus to «release political prisoners.» The authors consider this requirement the only possible subject of negotiation between the EU and the Belarusian government.
