Every Sixth Veteran of the Great Patriotic War Live Alone in Belarus

Currently, 42.22 thousand veterans of the Great Patriotic War live in Belarus. There are 16 Heroes of the Soviet Union and one Holder of the Order of Glory of three degrees among them. According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, every third Belarusian veteran lives in the countryside, every sixth is a lonely man.

As Ministry of Labor calculated, there are 30.566 people — direct war participants in Belarus. Among them, 8.9 thousand people — disabled veterans of Ist and IInd group — who were decorated with the medal «For Defense of Leningrad» and 916 people with a sign «To the inhabitants of besieged Leningrad». The number of people affected by war consequences is about 47 thousand people. Among them, there are 42.5 thousand people who are former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps, prisons and ghettos.

The average pension of veterans is 800 thousand rubles, Belarusian News inform. Veterans are provided with free supply of medicines, technical means of social rehabilitation, fare on all forms of urban and suburban transport. Veterans of the Great Patriotic are also entitled to a 50 percent discount on utility bills.

In the first quarter of this year in Belarus, veterans of the Great Patriotic are provided with various forms of assistance totaling 317.7 million rubles. At the expense of these funds, there renovated apartments, houses, outbuildings, repaired stoves, electrical wiring, installed stand-alone fire alarms.
