Everyone Wants For Democracy is Persecuted in Belarus, Shushkevich says

Ex-chairman of the Supreme Council of Belarus Stanislav Shushkevich on eve of his visit to Lithuania on the occasion of the 20 anniversary of the restoration of independence met  with Polish President Lech Kaczynski in Warsaw. "Poland understands that the regime in Belarus represses not only Belarusian Poles. For freethinking and wish for democracy everybody is persecuted today in Belarus ", — said the politician.

Stanislav Shushkevich said he also met in Poland with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, the deputies of the Sejm and the Senate, and Secretary of State Office of the President of Poland Mariusz Handzlik. «After these meetings, we flew to Vilnius with the Polish president on his plane,on the way we could talk face-to-face for more than 40 minutes» — press center «Charter 97» quoted politician.

«We have reached full understanding. I am very pleased that the President and Parliament and even the Foreign Ministry of Poland unified position on Belarus and at the moment. They understand that the anti-democratism of  Belarusian authorities concerned not only the Poles — it is a whole picture of the country, the rights of all citizens are violated.

Upon arrival in Lithuania, the former chairman of the Supreme Council of Belarus took part in celebrations in the Seimas of Lithuania and the Presidential palace. According to the politician, the president of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite personally invited him to a celebratory lunch with the presidents of European countries. «I was very happy and pleased to talk with her and see how she is respected in the country, and by colleagues from other European countries,» — said Stanislav Shushkevich.

No one will give irresponsible loans to Lukashenko, Shushkevich.

Stanislav Shushkevich also met with President Valdis Zatlers, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, former presidents of Lithuania and Estonia, Valdas Adamkus and Arnold Ruutel.

«We talked a lot about the situation in Belarus and the European approach to solving the problem of democracy in our country. I don’t want to speak about understanding of the situation by presidents and how they are going to act to correct it. I do not want it to be known to Belarusian regime ahead of time. But I can say that the ideas are interesting, «-  said the politician.


Stanislav Shushkevich stressed that the president understands that no real steps to democratize the Belarusian authorities are done. «Nobody needs to be convinced. We must proceed from conversations to actions. I can only say that, as I understand, no one will give irresponsible loans to Lukashenko»- said the politician.

As about the official Belarusian delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Buria that went to Vilnius  Alexander Lukashenko refused to visit the event , according to Stanislav Shushkevich, he could «not even see them.» «With whom they met and what did in Lithuania — it is not clear», — stated politician.
