A petition to withdraw chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Sergei Gaydukevich from the election campaign was recieved by the Central Election Commission on Friday, October 8. "The CEC, indeed, received a statement from Sergei Vasilievich Gaydukevich, a brief statement without any motivation," the CEC secretary Nikolai Lozovik informed the Telegraf.
«Under the law, even the registered candidate for president may refuse to participate in the election campaign any time. And Sergey Gaydukevich hasn’t been even registered as a candidate, he is an ordinary citizen, like you and me,» CEC secretary said.
«In fact, Sergei Gaydukevich could even not apply to the CEC. Election Code contains no restrictions on the withdrawal of the candidature from the election. Moreover, the legislation doesn’t govern this process. Applicants who decide not to participate in elections, can simply stop the activities of their action groups,» Nikolai Lozovik said.
A potential presidential candidate, pensioner, civil engineer Peter Borisov, who has also declared to withdraw his candidacy in favor of Vital Rymasheuski, according to Nikolai Lozovik, may not inform the CEC about his decision. «The situation is more evident here. This candidate has a very small action group, which is only 110 people. It’s practically unreal to collect the required 100 thousand signatures with that number of members,» the secretary of the CEC noted.
CEC was Not to Withdraw Niakliaeu from Elections, Lozovik
Nikolai Lozovik also denied reports that the CEC had planned to withdraw Vladimir Niakliaeu from the presidential election of for early campaigning. «There’s no candidate to withdraw yet. There is reason to warn the action group, not Niakliaeu,» Nikolai Lozovik said.
«The CEC hasn’t ever been thinking to remove Vladimir Niakliaeu from registration. On the contrary, we now show the maximum tolerance in order to demonstrate the thesis, declared by the CEC before the campaign. We strive to create favorable conditions for all candidates. Nevertheless, this does not mean that the action groups could betray our confidence. If there are any serious violations they, of course, will be stopped,» the Secretary of the CEC added.
