Lithuanian trucker hanged himself right by the rear-view mirror of his car, where he'd been spending the night, at "Privalka-Raigardas" checkpoint near Hrodna on Thursday, November 18. Belarusian customs officers detained his wagon at the border with Lithuania on the eve of the event. The hauler tried to smuggle a large shipment of cigarettes.

According to the deputy head of Hrodna regional customs Victor Gureev, customs officers found 731 boxes (365.5 thousands) of cigarettes in a car. Smuggled goods was covered by formal clearance papers and placed behind the packs of fuel pellets.

However, under the Belarusian legislation, man wouldn’t be entitled to a criminal prosecution for smuggling. Customs officers made a report on administrative violation, fined him and confiscated the goods, the newspaper «Vecherny Grodno» reports.

The driver spent the night in Hrodna in the car in the warehouse for temporary storage of Hrodna regional customs office. The customs officers discovered his body in the morning. The man left his wife and two children in Lithuania. His relatives can not explain what made a happy family man commit such an action.

Senior Assistant Attorney of Hrodna voblast Viacheslav Ignatik reported that no criminal case over the trucker’s death had been brought, however, the investigation is underway. Up to the moment the man has been proved to have committed suicide, as there were no injuries found.

The hauler’s car is still in Hrodna. And it’s up to the court to decide what to do with the truck (to confiscate or return to the Lithuanian owners), because the cigarettes were not hidden in any special cache.
