On the background of the prevailing political situation in Belarus, countries of the European Union cannot support the provision of loans for Belarus from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "It'll be hard for the EU to make steps towards Belarus, if we stay in a situation when there are a number of political prisoners in Belarus, as it is seen today," a source close to the European Commission reported on May 13.

Speaking about the opportunity to vote on the IMF board of directors to allocate credit to Belarus, a source says that the EU is ready to assist Belarus in a very difficult situation, currently prevailing in the country. But instead, according to a source, the EU should receive clear signals from the Belarusian authorities regarding the situation of political prisoners, reports IA «REGNUM-Belarus.»

According to a source, the EU has frozen the expansion of the mandate of the European Investment Bank in Belarus because of the political situation in the country. «In case with the bank, mandate is given by the EU,» said the source.

As Telegraf previously reported, a criminal case under article «riots» were instituted after the presidential elections in December 2010 and the protests, followed by the announcement of the election results in Belarus. Five former presidential candidates are among the other defendants in the case. The European Union considers the prosecution of ex-candidates and other participants in the protest unfounded and unacceptable, and calls upon the authorities to withdraw all charges against them.
