India Is Interested in Belaruskali Privatization

India is interested to participate in the privatization of the largest CIS producer of potash fertilizers — Belaruskali. It was officially announced by the Ambassador of India to Belarus, Ramesh Chander. The Ambassador suggests that further discussion on this issue may take place in October 2010 during the visit of Vice Premier of Belarus, Vladimir Semashko, to India at energy conference.

According to Ramesh Chander, India is one of the largest suppliers of potash fertilizers from Belarus. The diplomat stressed the interest in this kind of product, as India’s economy is based on agriculture and the country needs fertilizers, BelTA informs.

«We are interested in further development of cooperation in this sector. There appeared new opportunities for cooperation in this sphere, when Belaruskali privatization was announced. I would like to use an opportunity to express officially India’s interest to engage in the process», Ramesh Chander said.

According to the Ambassador of India, First Vice-Premier of Belarus, Vladimir Semashko, received an invitation from the Minister of Energy of India to take part in energy conference to be held in October 2010. The diplomat noted that if the visit took place, then it was quite possible that there would be discussed a possibility of Indian capital’s participation in Belaruskali privatization. Moreover, in November 2010, there will be held a meeting of joint commission on economic cooperation between India and Belarus, where the issue nay be included in agenda.

Kerimov plans to buy Belaruskali controlling stake, Russian mass media

As Telegraph reported earlier, Russian mass media informed that Uralkali leadership was also interested in Belaruskali privatization. Co-owners of Russian company, Suleiman Kerimov, offered to buy Belaruskali controlling stake at of $7.5 billion.

However, in Belaruskali they did not confirm the information about the talks with Russian billionaire. «We knew about Karimov’s interest in buying shares from mass media, there is no certain information about it», stated in Belaruskali.

Belarusian government also categorically denied the information that the country’s authorities had negotiated to sale Belaruskali company to Russian billionaire.

The Chinese side is also interested in Belaruskali privatization. Negotiations with Belarus’ authorities are being held by the largest Chinese potash importer Sinofert Holdings and China Blue Chemical.
