Former Lithuanian President, Valdas Adamkus criticized the plans of Belarusian authorities to construct Ostrovetskaya nuclear plant. "It is difficult to explain the construction of Belarusian nuclear power plant near Lithuanian capital because there are a lot of places with little concentration of people. In some cases, we must adhere to concrete security measures", the politician said.

Valdas Adamkus said that he saw a purely political aspect in Belarusian plans. «Here we are faced with high politics. The construction of such power plant on the one hand, and a kind of siege of Lithuania for political purposes — on the other», Adamkus said, responding the question about plans to build a nuclear power plant in Belarus and Kaliningrad region.

Furthermore, ex-President of Lithuania underlined that like 20 years ago, he believes that nuclear power plant is the cleanest source of energy. «Lithuania can not spare without nuclear plant, practically the whole world adhere to nuclear energy», DELFI quotes the politician.

«It would be not wise but also dangerous to stand out. I say once again — there will be no political security without energy security. If we’re smart, we want to create our own state, free people and to be independent, we must create the conditions for energy independence. We will not develop our economy and welfare without energy», Adamkus said.
